UniCal Bags Award for Academic Excellence

The Governing Council of Nigeria Education Week has conferred on the University of Calabar the prestigious 'Landmark Achievement Award for Academic Excellence' in acknowledgement of the institution's "impeccable academic records and proven integrity". According to a letter signed by the Chairperson of the Council, Prof. Sidi Osho, the award is only "given to institutions that have distinguished themselves in academic excellence both in professionalism of lecturers and specifically in the efficiency of their graduands. The letter indicated that the honour is also in recognition of the commitment demonstrated by the University towards education programmes, activities and the ideals of the Governing Council of Nigeria Education Week. UniCal VC Calls for NDDC Intervention

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, has appealed to the Chairman of the Board of the Niger-Delta Development Commission, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, to come to the aid of the university in its infrastructural development efforts. Prof. Akpagu who made the appeal while on a courtesy visit to the NDDC Chairman at the Board's headquarters in Port Harcourt, expressed dismay that as one of the oldest federal universities in the South/South region,  UniCal was the least developed in terms of infrastructure and academic programmes. He told the NDDC Board Chairman that the university was in dire need of high impact projects such as an Ultra-modern Medical Centre, a befitting Senate Building and Faculty of Pharmacy Building. ADMISSION INTO UNICAL IS FREE - VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, has declared that, contrary to erroneous beliefs in certain quarters, admission into the institution attracts no additional fees other than those charged by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB. He made the declaration on his Whatsapp page yesterday while responding to reports making the rounds on social media that JAMB had released admission cut-offs for the 2017/18 academic year. Prof. Akpagu made it clear that JAMB had not released any information on cut-offs and urged prospective UTME candidates to "ignore fake news about any releases from JAMB" concerning admission cut-offs. Police Nab Unical Solar Batteries Thief

In what appears to be a major breakthrough, the police have arrested a certain Stanley Osim who is suspected to have stolen batteries from the solar-powered street lights in the University of Calabar. According to a police source, the said Stanley Osim who resides in one of the Boys Quarters on campus, was caught with four of the stolen batteries. The source further disclosed that the suspect has been arraigned before a Magistrate's Court in Calabar. The case will be heard on 14/08/17. It will be recalled that the management of the University of Calabar had some months ago reported that fifty-four batteries installed in the solar-powered street lights had been stolen. Reacting to news of the arrest, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu, thanked the police for arraigning the suspect and expressed the hope that this will lead to the recovery of the remaining fifty batteries. UNICAL TO PRODUCE ARTEMISIA ANNUA

The University of Calabar today entered into a research and development collaboration with Calapharm Nigeria Limited, a wholy owned Cross River State Government Pharmaceutical Company. Explaining the terms of the collaboration when he visited the Vice-Chancellor in his office today, Mr. Farhan Khan, a Pakistani Consultant/Manager of the company said the deal will help Unical to genetically modify Artemisia Annua for local production. He also disclosed that the collaboration would involve the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad Pakistan and Anamed International EV as research partners. Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu, expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Khan for affording Unical the opportunity to extend the frontiers of research in genetic modification by making the institution a centre of excellence in this regard.
